Meeting Point - Caffi Siabod, A5, Capel Curig
We will meet at the cafe for around an hour to an hour and a half giving you an opportunity to get a hot drink and food whilst we chat and introduce ourselves.
We will have a look at some of the different maps available, look at how features look different on different scale maps and different branded maps.
Everybody will be provided with a sharpie pen and a laminated map of the area we are working in to use for the day, you are also welcome to use your own map. If you don’t have a compass and need to borrow one please let us know before the day and if buying one we would recommend buying a SILVA Base Plate Compass.

10.30am
Travel to the starting point, Uchaf Bunkhouse - Park in the A5 Lay-by
The starting point of the walk is the very end of the parking lay-by on the eastern side of Llyn Ogwen towards Capel Curig
11.00am
We will set off in a group of 8 and spend the first half an hour to an hour slowly walking and looking at the features on the ground and looking at recognising where we are on the map and how we got there and how to confirm where we are.
From here i will be splitting people into small groups for small sections of walking where you will yourself navigate under my guidance and identifying features and contours from the map on the ground. It’s a very good way to learn to match the map with the ground by getting involved rather than just watching someone use a map.
As part of the walk we will be on a bigger well marked path, then move towards a much smaller unmarked path and then we will navigate through some sections of ground completely away from the paths and then relocating ourselves back on a path and actively finding our way back to the start point using different paths.
4pm - Finish
I fully expect us to be off the hill by 4pm, where we can then have a quick chat and ill answer any queries or questions you have about the day, or any guidance and tips for going forward with navigation.
