The Adventure

Trip Overview

Run one of the world's most iconic long-distance mountain trails on an unforgettable journey around the Mont Blanc massif. The Tour du Mont Blanc travels through France, Italy and Switzerland, crossing high Alpine passes, beautiful valleys and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Europe. This isn't a race. Our aim is to experience the complete journey on foot over six incredible days — running the flowing trails and descents, moving efficiently over easier terrain and power-hiking the major Alpine climbs. With your main luggage transported between overnight stops, you'll run each day carrying only a lightweight mountain running pack. This is a genuine multi-day mountain running adventure and a fantastic goal for experienced runners looking to take their trail running to the next level. The Adventure Distance: approximately 170 km Total ascent: approximately 10,000 m+ Countries: France, Italy & Switzerland Running days: 6 Trip duration: 8 days / 7 nights Highest passes: over 2,500 m Terrain: Alpine trails, mountain passes, woodland, rocky tracks and technical descents Distances and ascent are approximate and may vary according to the precise route, accommodation availability, weather and trail conditions. How Hard Is It? This is a challenging multi-day trail-running adventure. You don't need to be an elite ultrarunner, and we aren't trying to race around Mont Blanc. However, you do need a strong level of endurance and previous experience of long days running or hiking in the mountains. You should be comfortable: Running for several hours at a time Completing trail runs of 25–30 km Running on consecutive days Power-hiking long and steep climbs Descending confidently on uneven mountain trails Spending 7–10 hours in the mountains Running in potentially wet, cold or hot conditions Carrying a small running pack Previous marathon or ultra-distance experience would be useful, but isn't necessarily essential if you have a strong background in mountain and trail running. The emphasis throughout the trip is steady, sustainable movement rather than speed. Major climbs will normally be power-hiked, while runnable trails, valleys and descents provide opportunities to run. Training for the Tour du Mont Blanc Preparation should focus less on outright speed and more on your ability to keep moving efficiently for several consecutive days. Training should include regular trail running, long runs on hilly terrain, sustained climbing and descending, back-to-back longer training days and experience carrying the equipment you'll use during the trip. Building muscular durability is particularly important. Being able to run 30 km once is very different from being able to do it again the following morning. AZOW can provide guidance on preparing for the trip before departure. Don’t see any open organised groups? Get in touch for private group trip prices now

Your Trip

Day-by-Day Itinerary

A carefully planned itinerary combining great running, spectacular locations and time to enjoy the destination.

Day 1

Day 1 – Arrive in Chamonix

Arrive in the legendary Alpine town of Chamonix and meet your guide and fellow runners. We'll use the evening for introductions, a full trip briefing and a final check of clothing and mountain equipment. You'll also have time to explore Chamonix and enjoy the atmosphere beneath the Mont Blanc massif. Running: None Overnight: Chamonix

Day 2

Day 2 – Chamonix / Les Houches to Les Contamines

Approx. 27 km | 1,600 m ascent Our Tour du Mont Blanc adventure begins. Leaving the Chamonix Valley, we head towards Les Houches before climbing towards Col de Voza. Depending on conditions and the group, we can take the spectacular route towards the Col de Tricot, with views towards the Bionnassay Glacier. The trail then descends through Alpine meadows and traditional mountain settlements before reaching Les Contamines. It's a superb introduction to the terrain we'll experience during the week. Expected time on the trail: approximately 6–8 hours Overnight: Les Contamines

Day 3

Day 3 – Les Contamines to Vallée des Glaciers / Les Chapieux

Approx. 25–30 km | 1,700–1,900 m ascent Today we move deeper into the mountains. From Les Contamines we travel towards Notre-Dame de la Gorge before beginning the long climb towards the Col du Bonhomme. Continuing across the high mountain terrain, we cross the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme before descending towards Les Chapieux and the Vallée des Glaciers. This is our first real high-mountain day and gives a taste of the scale of the journey ahead. Expected time on the trail: approximately 7–9 hours Overnight: Les Chapieux / Vallée des Glaciers

Day 4

Day 4 – Vallée des Glaciers to Courmayeur

Approx. 25–30 km | 1,500–1,800 m ascent Today we leave France and run into Italy. The day begins with the climb towards the Col de la Seigne at 2,516 m, marking the French–Italian border. From the pass, the character of the mountains changes dramatically as the huge southern face of the Mont Blanc massif comes into view. We descend into the beautiful Val Veny before following superb balcony trails towards Courmayeur. After several days in the mountains, arriving in this famous Italian Alpine town is always a special moment. Expected time on the trail: approximately 7–9 hours Overnight: Courmayeur

Day 5

Day 5 – Courmayeur to La Fouly

Approx. 32–33 km | 2,000–2,100 m ascent One of the biggest and most spectacular days of the tour. Leaving Courmayeur, we climb towards Rifugio Bertone before joining the incredible balcony trail overlooking the Mont Blanc massif. We continue towards Rifugio Bonatti and through the Italian Val Ferret. Our major climb of the day takes us to the Grand Col Ferret at 2,537 m, where we cross our second international border. We're now in Switzerland. A long, runnable descent through Alpine meadows eventually brings us to the small mountain village of La Fouly. Expected time on the trail: approximately 8–10 hours Overnight: La Fouly

Day 6

Day 6 – La Fouly to Trient

Approx. 30–32 km | 1,500–1,700 m ascent A different but equally beautiful stage through the Swiss Val Ferret. The first part of the day provides some more runnable terrain as we travel through traditional Swiss villages towards Champex-Lac. From Champex, the route begins climbing again towards the high pastures around Bovine. Fantastic trails then lead us towards Col de la Forclaz before descending towards Trient. By now, Chamonix is tantalisingly close — but one final mountain day remains. Expected time on the trail: approximately 7–9 hours Overnight: Trient / Col de la Forclaz

Day 7

Day 7 – Trient to Chamonix

Approx. 28–35 km | 1,900–2,300 m ascent The final stage — and a spectacular way to finish the Tour du Mont Blanc. We climb from Trient towards the Col de Balme, crossing the border back into France. From here, Mont Blanc and the Chamonix Valley finally come back into view. We continue through the mountains above the valley before beginning our final descent towards Chamonix. After approximately 170 kilometres and more than 10,000 metres of climbing, we arrive back where our journey began. Tour du Mont Blanc complete. Tonight we'll celebrate together in Chamonix. Expected time on the trail: approximately 8–10 hours Overnight: Chamonix
